Double Fine Productions is currently looking for a highly experienced, professional Art Manager for its San Francisco development studio. The ideal candidate combines art team management experience with a solid aesthetic sensibility in order to drive efficiency across a team of creatives. The primary job responsibility is to coordinate a multidisciplinary content team to craft and realize the game’s artistic vision within reasonable schedule, budget, and technology constraints.

The Art Manager will collaborate with production and vision holders to determine art team priorities and allocations to bring the world of Psychonauts to life. As a manager of a sizeable art team, the Art Manager will contribute to the development of individuals artistically and professionally, as well as providing input on issues such as recruitment and defining career paths within the studio. The position also requires a fluency in modern 3D art creation techniques and an avid interest in pushing the leading edge of game art development. Across the whole department, the Art Manager should create an environment of empowerment, inspiration, and strong mentorship.

1. Directly manage the art team, including animators, modellers, world builders, effects artists, and concepts artists. Work with production to define the art schedule, and establish procedures and expectations.
2. Maintain overall art vision and quality across all departments through style guides, paintovers, peer review, and regular feedback.
3. Ensure the timely and reliable delivery of all art assets within schedule and budget considerations.
4. Create and maintain art production pipelines, processes, and workflows.
5. Collaborate with technical art and programming teams to develop new tools, engine features, and workflow changes.
6. Proactively develop the skills of the team’s artists, including mentoring, suggesting educational opportunities, and generally advocating professional development.
7. Coordinate with and manage outsource partners for timely delivery, as well as parity with internal art style and quality.

1. Previously shipped titles as an art department manager or art lead.
2. Able to manage a large team of artists in a fast-changing game production environment.
3. Strong communications and organizational skills.
4. Work with operations staff and art team members in areas such as hiring and professional development.
5. Able to successfully deconstruct broad feature goals into prioritized tasks.
6. Able to build consensus on overall goals and balance resource allocation based on project goals and individual ability.
7. A minimum of 5 years’ management experience.

1. Experience guiding the overall aesthetic of a game across multiple areas of art content.
2. Direct art creation experience on a shipped level-based PC or console title.
3. Examples of stylized art creation or direction from previous professional or personal work.
